Mosquito Monitor

In the Mosquito Monitor programme, we have been mapping invasive mosquitoes in Hungary with the help of the public since 2019! The programme was launched by the HUN-REN Ecological Research Centre and the University of Pécs.

What does it mean to monitor invasive mosquitoes?

Climate change, intensive trade and tourism are driving many species to landscapes far from their native habitat, where some are able to establish colonies. This process of biological invasion has led to three new species being introduced to our country, in addition to the 50 native species of mosquitoes. Invasive mosquito species can spread pathogens (such as viruses and nematodes) that are dangerous to humans and other animals. To understand the epidemiological threat, we need to know the spatial and temporal patterns of distribution of these species. In ecology, this long-term tracking of species is called monitoring. Reports from the public (whether from captured specimens or photographs sent via mobile apps or email) are identified by our experienced dipterology experts so that distribution maps can be produced from the aggregated data.
